1．The Minerva Approach: Improving How You Learn

Did you know that you forget about 90% of what you’re taught in a traditional class after only three days? Imagine how much more you could be getting from your education if we learned differently. Over the last decade, Minerva has been refining an approach that’s focused on more engaging teaching and learning. We emphasize specific skills, the same ones experts agree are the most important, so that you’re not stuck memorizing content, regurgitating it, and then forgetting it later.

Learning with Minerva is different in three key ways: it’s fully active and discussion-based. This means instead of being lectured, you’re interacting with your classmates and your teachers, not sitting passively. It’s also designed to be built over time and across subjects. ２．Forum: A New Way to Learn

The active learning Forum is the unexpected learning Forum, the place where you’re constantly engaging with what you’re learning.

As a Minerva student, I get to take classes from anywhere in the city. All of Minerva’s classes are taught in the seminar format with a maximum of 18 students.

Everyone agrees that higher education could be much better than it is today. Minerva is acting on that by putting together state-of-the-art technology and superb pedagogy. We have, at our fingertips, tools that are designed to engage the students a hundred percent of the time.

When you characterize a problem, it’s important that it helps guide you to the solution. Perfect. That’s excellent.

In a normal classroom, there are people behind you, there are people to the side of you, but it’s nice to be able to see everybody and their reactions to what’s being talked about in class.

I feel like I’m in a room with all of my students. I simply forget I’m on the computer. You will be going into breakout groups.

It’s the kind of learning where we’re active participants instead of passive recipients and it’s so much more fun than a traditional class.

We are the only school in the world that uses the science of learning to design not just what we teach, but how we teach it.

So how do you create the very best educational experience; The best student experience; The best type of pedagogy and curriculum in the 21st-century context, without having the kinds of preconceived notions or burdens of an existing institution? Our goal is twofold: first and foremost, it is to create the world’s leading university—to be the place of choice for the smartest, hardest working students all over the world. Our secondary goal is to actually have broader influence in the higher education sector, to actually lead the rest of higher education to a new concept of curriculum.

Many universities have come to the point now where they realize they can’t just teach things the faculty want to teach because that’s what the faculty do their research on. But instead, need to be thinking about what the students need to succeed after they graduate. But many of them seem to have this view that they should be teaching skills that are relevant for the jobs that exist today. We don’t do that. We teach Habits of Mind and Foundational Concepts that’ll allow the students to keep learning for the rest of their lives; that’ll allow them to adapt and succeed at jobs that don’t even exist yet.

So our vision for Minerva is to find the brightest, most motivated students in the world, train them in the common intellectual language. Minerva’s for students who have a passion for learning, who are open to new experiences, who’re curious, who value creativity, and are interested in other cultures. They will have a chance to meet people from all over the world and actually live in different places in the world and become part of an international network.

One of the huge advantages that Minerva has is the Minerva platform, which was developed internally, not as a general-purpose conference tool or something like that, but rather explicitly for seminars. You have to ensure that there is communication between one professor and another. If you, as a student, are an expert at one form of analysis, but are struggling with another form; if you’re an expert in one form of communication, but are having difficulty in another form, this professor needs to know what you’re struggling with. They need to be able to carry forward your intellectual development from one class to another. And we don’t believe that that’s possible to do, without our platform.

Minerva has sometimes been characterized as an online university which is absolutely inaccurate. It’s true that we teach courses via the platform because we can do so so effectively, but we also have students living together in residence halls, which is where they get engaged in the co-curricular and extracurricular activities that are at the heart of many aspects of college life. We have activities that are designed to get them out of the facilities, out of the dorms, and into the cities where they will explore and bond together, in a way that I don’t think is possible in most other kinds of university experiences.

When you get through Minerva, the experience that you’re going to have will put students so many miles ahead of anybody else going through any other experience. That for those motivated, high potential individuals, there’s no other choice. He or she will have the tools to be able to invent the future for the rest of us. Our students will create the legacy of Minerva. And, in many ways, Minerva will fade into the background, and allow our students to shine. And that’s ultimately our goal.

Apprez High School Accelerator メソッドの特徴

提供する全てのコンテンツと教育メソッドは、ミネルバの今までの知見と科学的根拠に基づいた学習方法であり、ミネルバによって開発されたものを使用します。ミネルバでは、100%アクティブラーニングの教授法、学域横断型カリキュラムデザイン、そして、クラスメイトや講師からのフィードバックを教育上の重要な要素として考えており、本プログラムに関しても、これらの要素が組み込まれたカリキュラムとなっています。

Apprez High School Accelerator プログラムの概要
